One of the keys to being able to earn money online is choosing a niche. Just think of a niche as your specialty. If anyone needs this or that, you are the person that they turn to, because that is your specialty. However, one of the challenges which the Internet presents to us is its expansive reach, and versatile nature. As the old (relatively speaking) joke goes, the greatest thing about the Internet is that you can do virtually anything, the worst thing about the Internet, is that you can do virtually anything.

Since the Internet is so huge, we need to develop a strategy when it comes to earning money online. We need to choose a starting point which we are interested in, and stick with it until we are successful. Conversely, we need to at least exhaust this option to the point that it is clear to us that it will not be as successful as we originally thought.

Once our plan is in place, we need to take action by marketing. The size of the internet makes marketing challenging. However, we can set ourselves up to succeed. For instance, it is not a good idea to try and compete with large companies who have already become the go to business in their niche. Instead, we are looking for the relatively untapped opportunities for sharp entrepreneurs such as ourselves.

In order to do this, you first must analyze what you are selling, or planning to sell. In particular, your niche should reside in an area in which you have a good deal of knowledge, or at least a high degree of interest. For instance, do accountants find your products or services attractive? If this is the case, you are probably looking at a pretty broad group. Hence, it is necessary to narrow it down. Become pensive and try to figure out who is most likely going to gravitate towards your products or services. Would it be small business accountants, tax planners, or forensic accountants? Once you make the determination, you may need to even narrow your niche even further. For instance, your product may appeal to an accountant at a certain stage of their career.

Okay, here is the fun part. You have pinpointed your niche. Therefore, it is time to discover relevant search phrases. Visit Google, Yahoo, and Bing, and determine how many competing websites there are for these search phrases by conducting a search, and seeing how many results are returned. Once you have done this, run the search phrases though Google Adwords: Keyword Tool (it's free) to determine how many people are using this search phrase per month. If the number is high enough, and there are few competing websites, congratulations, you have discovered your niche.

After you have chosen your niche, try to use both your niche, and your top two keywords or key phrases in the title tag of your website. Doing this can help your search engine ranking. Another method for choosing a niche is to study the competition, and find out how to make your site stand apart.

Nevertheless, simply choosing a niche will help your website stand out, and dramatically increase your ability to earn money online. The key is to identify a niche with plenty of potential customers, and little competition. If you do this, you have a very strong chance of watching your business grow.
