This house roof design has got its name after butterfly wings. American civil engineers tried some different and unique roofs design for the purpose of natural rainfall water storage system.

This whole design gives a butterfly view when seen from the front side of the house. The outer lifted roof edges looks like the wings of the butterfly. Hence it got its name after its looks as butterfly roofs.

In simple words this design was made by joining two roofs making a valley at the joint of both roofs. Thus, during rainy season rainfall starts collecting at the center of the roof. A little slope in the design of the roof is the reason behind it.

This design gave a different and new look to the houses with technical advantage also. The butterfly roof design is not only meant for the good looks but also have some advantages a foot ahead to the butterfly looks.

The storage water can be used for various household purposes like car washing, gardening etc. This directly cuts the supply bills plus it does not need any kind of water pump also.

After its popularity different sub designs of butterfly roof were introduced like shed roof that has one flat gable and one butterfly gable, gable roof, saddle roof which is a little curved roof type, zigzag roof which are made by connecting a number of small butterfly roofs.

Other remarkable advantage like the interiors of the house feels very airy and fresh and house's unencumbered views to the south. Full sunlight entering due to increased height of walls and hence windows gives it's more plus point of being Eco-friendly to the design.

Leakage problem makes the butterfly design less comfortable. A bit of extra maintenance involved due to this disadvantage makes it less popular .even blockage in drainage system causes serious problems to the pillars. This decreases the weight bearing strength of the pillar. Hence decrease in popularity of design.
